An interview with E.ON Energie Deutschland GmbH, one of Munich Climate Week's sponsors

As Munich Climate Week prepares for its very first edition, we continue our partner spotlight series with the organisations making it possible. This time, we talk to E.ON Energie Deutschland GmbH, the German sales company of the E.ON Group, about why it chose to support the initiative and what it takes to bring the energy transition into people's everyday lives.

For E.ON, that means giving households and businesses practical ways to take part in the energy transition, from solar technologies and heat pumps to electric mobility and smart energy management. As the company puts it:

"Our focus as the German sales unit of E.ON is to help customers actively participate in the energy transition."

In the interview, E.ON explains how it approaches its own footprint, how its ZukunftsStrom product channels everyday energy use into environmental projects, and where it still sees untapped potential.

What made E.ON want to be part of the very first Munich Climate Week as a sponsor?

For us, the Munich Climate Week is exactly the kind of platform that is needed right now. Tackling climate change requires more than technology and investment. It requires dialogue, collaboration, and people who are willing to turn ambition into action. As one of Germany's largest energy companies, we want to support our customers with our products and services to become part of the energy transition. Supporting the very first Munich Climate Week was therefore a natural fit. It brings together businesses, policymakers, NGOs, researchers, and citizens around a common goal: accelerating climate action.

As a business, what would you say is E.ON's own impact on climate change today, and what part of that is within your direct control to change?

A significant part of our contribution is supporting customers with solutions intended to reduce emissions – through new energy solutions, electrification and flexibility offers, we support our customers lower their carbon footprint. Of course, we work to reduce operational emissions in areas under our control. That includes our offices, vehicle fleet, buildings, procurement processes, and the way we use energy ourselves. These are areas where we have direct control and where we continuously work to improve. At the same time, we know that, as E.ON's sales company in Germany, our greatest contribution lies in creating solutions that support households and businesses to decarbonize.

With ZukunftsStrom, E.ON has found a way to turn everyday energy consumption into direct funding for environmental protection projects — and the model was recently recognised with the 'Deutscher Award für Nachhaltigkeitsprojekte'. What does it take to design a product like that with real impact rather than just a good story, and how do you measure whether it's actually working?

When we developed ZukunftsStrom, we wanted to create more than just a standard power product. The idea was to connect customers' everyday energy consumption with tangible environmental benefits and make that connection as transparent as possible. With ZukunftsStrom, we ensure that renewable electricity equivalent to our customers' consumption is generated in Germany and fed into the German power grid. In addition, E.ON invests 0.3 euro cents for every kilowatt-hour consumed into environmental and climate protection projects in Germany. To ensure quality, we work closely with trusted and experienced partners such as WWF Germany, ClimatePartner, and z-eco. These organizations bring valuable expertise in areas such as nature conservation, climate action, project assessment, and impact measurement. We are in regular exchange with them and receive ongoing updates on the progress and outcomes of the projects being supported.

Beyond its own operations, how does E.ON's role as an energy infrastructure provider multiply its climate impact — and what responsibility comes with that scale?

As part of the E.ON Group, E.ON Energie Deutschland GmbH contributes to the energy transition from a customer perspective. Our focus as the German sales unit of E.ON is to help customers actively participate in it – e. g. through products and services like solar systems, electric mobility and energy management systems that support the use of renewable energy, energy efficiency, and electrification.

What's still ahead for E.ON on this path, and who would you like to see join you as a collaborator to raise ambition and drive implementation?

The energy transition has made tremendous progress – and it remains the responsibility of society as a whole to drive it forward. At E.ON Energie Deutschland GmbH, our focus is on empowering customers to become active participants in the energy transition. Solar systems, heat pumps, electric mobility, and the intelligent integration of these technologies into a flexible and smart energy system all play a key role in achieving this goal. We see this integration as a crucial enabler of the energy transition. Our latest analyses ("E.ON Flex-Check") show that there is still significant untapped potential, and we are committed to unlocking it together with our customers.

As Munich Climate Week approaches, we are grateful to have E.ON Energie Deutschland GmbH alongside us. The company’s focus on helping customers actively participate in the energy transition in their daily lives fits the spirit of a week built around collaboration. We look forward to the conversations this partnership will spark across the city, from October 19 to 25.
