A Better Waste Strategy for Munich
Munich presents itself as a Zero Waste City – yet there is a clear gap between its ambitions and reality when it comes to climate protection and the circular economy. Valuable raw materials continue to end up in residual waste and are incinerated. At the same time, Munich remains at the bottom of the rankings in Germany for separate recycling collection. The Yellow Bin is finally being introduced, but a comprehensive recycling bin system is being rejected, financial incentives for waste reduction are lacking, and incineration capacity is being expanded. Targets for reducing residual waste remain largely on paper. What is going wrong – and what could a waste system look like that keeps resources in the loop, reduces residual waste and genuinely contributes to climate protection?
