Methane projects offer some of the most immediate opportunities for climate action, but their economics are rarely straightforward. Landfill gas and other methane projects require continuous investment in capture systems, equipment, monitoring and operations, often while gas yields decline, energy revenues fluctuate and costs increase. Carbon finance can therefore make the difference between minimum regulatory compliance and sustained, higher-impact methane mitigation.

As carbon markets move into the Paris Agreement era, the stakes are getting higher. What does credible additionality look like in practice? What happens to a project without carbon revenue? Which methane activities can attract buyers and investors? And how can Article 6 unlock international finance without compromising environmental integrity?

Bringing together project operators, carbon market experts, independent assessors and international institutions, this panel will put these questions to the test using real project experience. The conversation will connect what happens on the ground with credit quality, additionality, Article 6, buyer expectations and the financing structures needed to keep credible methane projects operating.

Rather than another discussion about why methane matters, the session will focus on what makes methane mitigation credible, financeable and scalable in the next generation of carbon markets.

This session is particularly relevant for carbon credit buyers and trading houses looking for credible supply and stronger quality signals; project developers and asset owners seeking to understand how projects can remain financeable over time; Article 6 practitioners and policymakers working on authorization, host-country priorities and international cooperation; carbon standards, ratings agencies and assurance providers focused on additionality and credit quality; and investors, climate finance institutions and corporates exploring how carbon finance can support measurable methane mitigation.
